The Long-Term Holder SOPR is Flashing Red. History Suggests We're Not Out Yet.

CryptoTiger On-chain
Observe the LTH SOPR 7-day moving average on July 7, 2024: 0.73. That is a cycle low. Long-term holders—those who have held Bitcoin for more than 155 days—are spending their coins at a loss. The math does not care about sentiment. It simply records reality. Context matters here. SOPR (Spent Output Profit Ratio) is a UTXO-based metric that measures whether the market is selling at a profit (>1) or a loss (<1). The Long-Term Holder subset filters out noise from short-term traders. When LTH SOPR drops below 1.0, it signals that conviction holders are in pain. As of July 20, the 7-day MA recovered to 0.94, and the 30-day MA sits at 0.88. That is still underwater. The recovery from 0.73 to 0.94 suggests the worst panic may have passed, but the market has not yet broken even. Core to my analysis is the stress-test of this signal. Based on my experience auditing the Tezos formal verification contracts in 2017, I learned that cryptographic proof does not equal functional safety. Similarly, a single metric does not confirm a trend reversal. The LTH SOPR bottom of 0.73 coincided with Bitcoin trading near $56,000 in early July. That low was likely triggered by forced liquidations and panic selling from large holders or mining entities. The subsequent bounce to $64,000 by July 20 lifted the SOPR, but the 30-day average remains depressed at 0.88. Silence in the code is the loudest warning sign. Here, the silence is the persistent inability of long-term holders to sell at a profit. Let me stress-test the mechanism. If LTH SOPR remains below 1.0 for another month, the supply dynamics shift. Long-term holders who bought at higher prices are now holding unrealized losses. If they capitulate again, we could see a repeat of the 2018–2019 bear market floor, where SOPR stayed below 1.0 for months. But the 2023 cycle showed a different pattern: LTH SOPR dipped below 1.0 only briefly in late 2022 and then recovered sharply. The current data point to a slower, grinding bottom—not a V-shaped recovery. The predictive question is: will 0.73 hold as the cycle low, or will a second wave of selling take it lower? Bulls will argue that long-term holders rarely sell at a loss, and that the recovery to 0.94 proves the worst is over. They have a point. In previous cycles, such as the 2020 COVID crash, LTH SOPR bottomed near 0.5 and then recovered within weeks. The current 0.94 is only 6% away from breakeven. A modest price rally to $68,000 could push the ratio above 1.0, signaling a return to profitability. Additionally, the Bitcoin supply cap and halving dynamics provide a structural tailwind. Miners are likely the marginal seller here, and their capitulation (visible in Hash Ribbons) often marks the final bottom. The contrarian angle is that the narrative of "long-term holder pain as a buy signal" may be correct—but the timing is everything. Complexity is often a veil for incompetence, and the complexity here is the interplay between macro liquidity, ETF flows, and on-chain metrics. My takeaway is a call for accountability. Trust is a variable, verification is a constant. The LTH SOPR below 1.0 is a variable. It can change. But until it consistently prints above 1.0, the risk of another leg down remains. Monitor the 7-day MA. If it sustains above 1.0 for three consecutive days, the bottom is likely confirmed. If it breaks back below 0.8, prepare for deeper capitulation. This is not financial advice. It is a math problem. And the math is not yet solved.
